American Airlines cancellation policy has evolved and is now more accommodating to passengers. There will be no cancellation fees for domestic or international flights. When changing flights, you will simply be needed to pay the fare difference (if your fare cannot be refunded).
Remember that you must cancel your flight before to departure to avoid paying a penalty. If you do not show up for your flight without cancelling it, it will be classed as a No Show, and the value of your ticket will be forfeited, whether or not it is refundable.
